Dyna Beads dynamically balance tires as they spin, resulting in a smooth ride. Your tire will remain perfectly balanced until it needs to be replaced.  Every time the tire starts a spinning cycle, the tire rebalances.

By contrast, a tire balanced “the old fashioned way” with lead weights can become unbalanced in as little as a thousand miles. You’ll know when that happens because the handlebars start to buzz. If you can safely look at the front tire (while it’s spinning on the road) you’ll see it vibrating. As the rubber wears, the wheel gradually becomes unbalanced.  You probably don’t realize this is happening because the degradation is gradual, but you can feel it in the handle bars or the seat of your pants.  Theoretically you could take the tires off and re-balance them with lead weights every few thousand miles, but that’s time consuming and expensive.  An easier solution is to use a balancing method that lasts the life of the tire – Dyna Beads.

What causes tire imbalance? 

Some tire/wheel assemblies arrive from the factory perfectly round, perfectly smooth, naturally balanced, and free of any imperfections.  It’s rare, but when it does happen it does there’s no need for lead weights or Dyna Beads.  But almost all tires DO require balancing.

Tire/wheel assemblies ALMOST ALWAYS have a combination of imperfections which result in an unbalanced condition.  As the tire spins, this imbalance imparts an elliptical motion (oscillation) to the axle because the wheel is literally “loping” down the road, like an egg rolling end-over-end. The axle transmits the oscillation to the suspension, and you feel it as vibration. An unbalanced tire bounces up and down because the suspension is storing and releasing energy thru the axle, to the suspension every time the tire spins through a complete rotation. It’s a complicated ballet between the various components, with the heaviest point of the wheel pulling the axle off-center.  Tread life is shortened, handling is compromised, and riding comfort is diminished.

So how do Dyna Beads work? 

Thinking in linear terms, Dyna Beads act as harmonic mass dampers.  (Wikipedia)  As the axle goes up, the beads at the bottom of the tire resist the upward movement (Physics 101 – a body at rest remains at rest until acted upon by some other force).  As the axle goes down, the beads at the top of the tire resist the downward movement.  Now put that into rotational terms, inside a spinning wheel. Each up/down movement of the tire is met with a small amount of nulling mass, and each rotation distributes the beads, increasing the amount of nulling mass at the point opposite the “heavy point of the tire”, until a state of equilibrium is reached.  The tire comes into balance and the oscillation of the axle is eliminated.

Tire is vibration free and beads stay in fixed position due to centripetal force.  Any extra beads are distributed evenly on either side of the tire.  When the tire stops spinning the beads roll to the bottom of the tire.  When the tire starts spinning the balancing process starts all over again.

Whew, that’s enough techno-speak!  Here’s the bottom line – Dyna Beads work.  We wouldn’t sell them if they didn’t.

“New Life” for an old tire.

We’ve received feedback from riders who put Dyna Beads into tires that had many thousands of miles on them, the tread was worn, and the tires were horribly out of balance.  With the addition of Dyna Beads the tires rode “like new” and the riders were able to extend the service life of the tire.

New tires will last longer because a balanced tire rolls with less resistance and develops less heat.  Heat leads to increased tread wear, as does under-inflation.

Field balancing your tires.


For the rider who wants to save money by changing their own tires, and for those who travel to the far corners of the world, Dyna Beads provide a perfect solution for “field balancing”.  You can balance your tires anywhere, anytime, just trickle an ounce or two of Dyna Beads into the tire through the valve stem. You won’t have to rely on Lady Luck that your tire will be naturally balanced, and you won’t have to resort to the “put the red dot on the sidewall at the valve stem” method of tire balancing. That old method was based on the belief that the red dot (the light spot) of the tire would offset the heavy point of the rim (the valve stem).  It seldom happens that way.  But before Dyna Beads it was the best course to follow when a spin-balancer and lead weights weren’t handy.

Tire pressure monitoring systems.

Tire pressure monitoring systems are integral to the valve stem, or are strapped to the inside of the metal rim.  Dyna Beads spend their life on the inside of the tire carcass, several inches away from any TPS sensor.  The two never meet, they spend their lives in different orbits.  You CAN use DynaB Beads with tire pressure monitoring systems.

 

How many Dyna Beads do you need in your motorcycle tire?

We used to sell kits containing 2 or 3 ounces, but now we only offer a DB-4 kit containing 4 ounces of Dyna Beads. We found that 99% of our customers ordered the DB-4 kit, so we eliminated the DB-2 and DB-3 kits from our sales inventory.  Having a spare ounce of beads is a good idea, in case your tire is outside the usual balance parameters.  Or you can save them for the next set of tires.

  • Smaller bikes generally require 1 ounce in both the front and rear tires… order DB-4 (you’ll have 2 ounces of beads leftover for the next tire change)
  • Medium-to-large bikes generally require 1 ounce in the front and 2 ounces in the rear… order DB-4 (you’ll have 1 ounce of beads leftover for the next tire change)
  • Large bikes (Gold Wings etc) generally require 2 ounces in front and rear… order DB-4

 Try to follow the recommendations listed below. Not having enough Dyna Beads in the tire can result in an unbalanced tire because there won’t be enough beads to offset the inherent wheel imbalance.

On some dual-sport bikes that use heavy steel rim locks to prevent the tire from spinning on the rim, riders have reported using up to 6 ounces of Dyna Beads (in one tire) to tame the beast.  That’s very unusual, but it worked for them.


Is it possible to put in too many beads?  Too much of anything will cause a problem, but with Dyna Beads, an exact weight is not necessary.  For motorcycles, if you are within 1/2 ounce of the recommended amount, you’re fine.  Inspect your tire’s sidewall for tire width information.  “There has been quite a bit of discussion on the GS list about Dyna Beads, and when I first saw them I was smelling “snake oil”. But I decided to get some and test them out. I put them in a worn, cupped, out of balance TKC-80 mounted on an ’89 R100GS. After several thousand miles in seven states the tire has certainly seen better days.

To begin the test, I put 1 oz. in thru the valve stem without removing the lead weights. I rode about 150 miles over various terrain, including some of Lower Alabama’s finest dirt roads. We should mention that in that same web forum message, the author announced that he was selling his current tire balancing setup, and was switching exclusively to Dyna Beads. And if that’s not enough… read this one:


 “I just thought I’d drop you a line with a quick review of my Dyna Bead experience. I own a 2007 Suzuki M109R that finally wore through the stock tires. I took the bike into a local parts dealer and ordered a new set of tires. I ordered a stock 130-70-18 front and a 250-40-18 rear. The shop charged me $102 to mount and balance the new tires. The first chance I got to take the bike out for a real ride, I notice a significant feeling of instability, and at high speeds, the bike became so unstable it wasn’t safe to ride.

I contacted the dealer who did the mount and balance and described the problem. The dealer argued and pushed back, and basically refused to even attempt to correct any issue, saying that I was riding faster than the tires were balanced for, and that I should have purchased different tires.

I was at a loss as to what I was going to do. I had just about decided to just trash the tires since the bike was no fun to ride anymore, when I read about the Dyna Beads. I’ll admit, that I was very skeptical, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and I ordered 8 oz. of beads.

“When the beads arrived I immediately set out to install them. I pulled 14 grams of lead weight off the rear wheel, and 35 grams off the front wheel. I installed 3 oz. of Dyna Beads in the rear wheel and 2. oz. of Dyna Beads in the front.

As soon as I pulled out on the road, the difference in feel was immediate. The bike just felt more solid and connected to the road than it ever had, even before the tire change. Cornering was now smooth and stable with no wobble in the handlebars. Even at speeds up to 120 mph, where the new tires nearly shook the bike out from under me, the bike was now smooth and stable.

Installation of the Dyna Beads was a cinch, and took about 10 minutes with the slick 4 oz. pre-filled tubes. All I needed was a little tool to remove the valve stem core, and my air compressor to air the tires back up! Piece of cake.

Where I was once expecting to take a $400 loss on the tires, I now know I’ll get a long life from them, and many enjoyable miles of riding. One more thing – some riders have asked whether they can get the same benefit derived from Dyna Beads, if they substitute the beads for “pennytech” counterfeits like steel BBs or plastic air soft pellets. Yes, those would possibly work, but they have a few drawbacks. One problem is the difficulty you would have getting them into the tire through the valve stem, another is the problem associated with tire carcass wear, another is that steel BBs will rust, etc, etc. By contrast Dyna Beads are harmless to the tire, inert and unaffected by moisture, and are properly sized for installation through the stem.   Plus, they’ve got a proven track record of reliability and performance.

 

How to install Dyna Beads

 

Here’s a series of photos showing Dyna Bead installation using BestRest’s exclusive DynaHose. The DynaHose is a long, flexible, pre-measured tube that contains the proper amount of Dyna Beads according to the kit you order. With the DynaHose there’s no pouring or measuring of the beads, the beads can be carefully trickled into the tire, and the DynaHose can be easily snaked between discs and spokes. It makes installation even easier!

 

This is the BestRest DynaHose. It contains 4 ounces of Dyna Beads. The DynaHose is graduated at one ounce intervals so you’ll know how exactly many beads you’ve inserted. Pinch the hose to stop the flow of beads.

Here’s the DynaHose next to the tire



Remove the valve cap, the valve stem, and any existing wheel weights

 


Thread the DynaHose between the disc or spokes. The flexibility of the
DynaHose makes this much easier than the older applicator kits.



Remove one black cap from the end of the DynaHose. The other cap remains in place.

 


Use the included ziptie to secure the open end of the DynaHose to the valve stem

 


Raise the other end of the DynaHose and slowly trickle the beads down the hose. A gentle tapping motion with one finger will keep a steady stream of beads rolling down the hose.

 

If the Dyna Beads get clogged at the valve stem, tap the stem with your finger and they’ll quickly drop down into the stem.


The quickest way to install Dyna Beads is to use an air hose with a nozzle.  Attach the Dyna Hose to the valve stem, put the air nozzle on the other end of the Dyna Hose, and give it a short blast of air. The beads will quickly move thru the valve stem and into the tire. Control the amount of beads with the air nozzle.  Using this method takes only a few seconds.

When you’ve inserted the desired quantity of Dyna Beads, lower the free end of the hose and stop the stream of beads. Pull the DynaHose off the valve stem and cap the end of the hose.

 

Replace the tire valve stem, inflate the tire to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, replace the valve cap and you’re done.

 

That’s all there is to it! As soon as the wheel starts to spin, Dyna Beads will dynamically and automatically re-balance the tire. When the wheel stops spinning the beads drop to the lowest point of the tire and wait for the next rotation and balancing cycle.

 

If you have a tire pressure monitoring system on your bike, don’t worry. The Dyna Beads won’t interfere with the system or damage it in any way.

 

Dyna Beads don’t thicken or harden over time like messy liquid balancing medias. And when you need to repair a puncture they don’t interfere with plugs or patches.

 

Shhh… don’t tell anybody… Here’s a secret tip for the Frugal Rider – You can recycle Dyna Beads and reinstall them in your next new tire. Use a small paper cup to collect them from the inside of the old tire when you break the old tire bead.
